South Africa Women will face India in the first match of the tri-series on Thursday, January 19 at Buffalo Park in East London. This will be valuable practice for both teams as well as the West Indies, who will be the third team to compete in the forthcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023, which begins on February 10. This will be the series’ first encounter, and both teams will be looking to get off to a winning start. The tri-series competition will have seven matches, with each team meeting the other two teams twice in the round-robin stage. The top two teams will then face off in the championship game on February 2. All of the games, including the final, will take place at Buffalo Park in East London. India Women will be without the services of Shafali Verma and Richa Ghosh, who are competing in the U-19 Women’s World Cup.
Their absence will create a gap in the batting order, which already has concerns. However, the team management will view this as an opportunity to put other players to the test.
Sabbhineni Meghana is expected to begin alongside Smriti Mandhana in place of Shafali, with Yastika donning the wicketkeeper’s gloves. Indian Women will also want Jemimah Rodrigues to rediscover her mojo in time for the big event. Notably, this will be the Proteas’ first international assignment since the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games in August of last year, and they will need to improve before hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup. Sune Luus will head South Africa in the meantime, as Dane Van Niekerk failed to reach the national benchmark norms for fitness.
