After four days of intense cricket, India won the first Test against hosts Bangladesh relatively early on the fifth day. While the game began on a balanced tone, with both sides putting up the tough competition, India gained momentum as the game went. The Indian team took a 1-0 lead because of strong performances from both batters and bowlers. The first day began with Indian batters Shreyas Iyer and Cheteshwar Pujara revitalising the innings after Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, and Virat Kohli failed. Despite Iyer’s inability to contribute much on the second day, the 87-run eighth-wicket stand between Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav enabled India to end their first innings at 404.

Following a fantastic batting showing, Indian bowlers Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav bowled brilliantly as the hosts finished the second day at 133/8. The Indian batsmen dominated the second innings, with Gill and Pujara both hitting hundreds to give India a commanding advantage. The two centuries forced India to declare their innings at 258/2. To win the first Test, Bangladesh had to chase 513 runs. Bangladesh got off to a flying start thanks to openers Najmul Hossain Shanto and Zakir Hasan, who shared a 124-run partnership. While the former scored 67 runs off 156 deliveries, the latter scored a magnificent 100 in his debut Test match before being removed. After their wickets, India chipped away at regular intervals.
