The Indian cricket team was docked one point and fined 20 percent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate in the Centurion Test against South Africa. According to Article 16.11 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, India was found to be one over short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration. With 12 points for a win, India will now have 11 points.

Currently, India is behind Australia, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan in the fourth spot. India created history in the Centurion Test as they became the first Asian nation to beat South Africa in their fortress. Centuries from KL Rahul and an eight-wicket haul by Mohammed Shami helped India secure a 113-run win against the Proteas.

India head to the next Test in South Africa high on confidence. They have never lost at the Wanderers in 29 years of touring the country. Out of the five Tests that they have played at the venue, they have won two and drawn three. In 2018, Virat Kohli and the Indian cricket team overcame impossible odds on a difficult wicket to win the Test. It is believed that the Johannesburg win laid the current foundation for India to dominate in all conditions.

India on the cusp of history in South Africa

The Indian cricket team ended 2021 on a historic note by winning the first Test against South Africa in Centurion. India has become the first Asian nation to win in South Africa’s fortress in Centurion. If Rahul was the star with the bat, then Shami along with the other pace bowlers contributed consistently to dent South Africa.

The Centurion Test was memorable for Shami. Four years ago, he took his 100th wicket while playing at the venue. In 2021, he became the ninth-quickest Indian bowler to take 200 wickets. This included his sixth five-wicket haul and it was his second in South Africa. Indian skipper Virat Kohli hailed the performance of Shami, labeling him as one of the best bowlers in the world.

“The way these guys bowl together has been a hallmark of our team getting a result in difficult situations. Absolutely world-class talent (Shami). For me, he’s the best three seamers in the world at the moment. His strong wrist, his seam position, and his ability to hit a length consistently (is great),” Kohli said.

If India win in Johannesburg, they will join Australia, England and South Africa to have won series everywhere.
