The three-time world champion delivered an impressive performance, winning all three of his round-robin matches in Group F of Stage Two to secure a comfortable advancement in the competition. Williams began by defeating veteran Barry Pinches with a commanding 3-0 scoreline. He then replicated this success against both Martin O’Donnell and Robbie Williams. At 48 years old, Williams has now triumphed in all six of his fixtures in the season-opening ranking event. He emerged from Stage One with a flawless record, securing three victories while only dropping a single frame.

While Williams hasn’t clinched a ranking title since the British Open approximately two years ago, his strong performance in Leicester is making him a contender for the championship. If he were to lift the trophy, he would become the second-oldest player to achieve ranking success, following in the footsteps of his compatriot Ray Reardon, who was 50 years old when he won the Players Professional Tournament in 1982.

Upon qualifying for Stage Three, Mark Williams remarked, “In the last match, I knew I needed a draw. So I got off to a great start, and I don’t think my opponent potted a ball then. You have to maintain your composure. If unexpected situations arise, you have to deal with them and give your best.”

“That’s exactly what I did. I played a few excellent frames, although the first four or five frames could have easily gone to my opponents. Today, luck was on my side.”
