This week, Alyssa Healy will officially take over as Australia’s captain while Meg Lanning continues her prolonged absence from the sport. As per a new website in Australia Lanning is still taking a long sabbatical from the sport and won’t be picked as Cricket Australia gets ready to reveal its team for the upcoming tour of India. In Lanning’s absence, Healy will be named as Australia’s captain, an incredible honour for one of the sport’s most accomplished international cricketers. Healy, who is already vice-captain of the team, will serve as captain of Australia while Lanning is away on an indefinite leave of absence.

Healy declined to discuss her role in the upcoming Indian tour because the team won’t be announced until later this week, but she does think that the matchup with Australia’s top recent white-ball rivals offers the chance to refocus after an incredibly successful international cycle over the previous four years. Australia beat India in the CWG 2022 final to win the gold medal. They also beat India in the 2020 T20 WC in the final at home. This particular series is going to be important in the context of the T20 world cup next year.

It will be an honour to lead Australia: Healy

It’s just an amazing group of women at the moment that has done some really amazing things over the last four years,” Healy said. “It’s almost an opportunity with Rachael Haynes leaving and Meg’s status a little bit up in the air. It’s a nice little opportunity for us to reset and go — what are our challenges coming next and where do we want to place ourselves moving forward and how do we want to play? We still don’t know quite what Meg’s doing just yet, so for me, I’m still vice-captain and I’ll play my role, whatever that might be, over in India. If the opportunity comes about to lead, then I’ll grab it with both hands and really enjoy that opportunity, She concluded.
