Australia defeated Asia Cup champions, Sri Lanka, after rebounding from a humiliating loss to New Zealand, but their last match against England was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to a wet outfield. While Ireland managed to defeat England and lost to Sri Lanka, their match with Afghanistan too was abandoned due to rain. This game, therefore, becomes much more important in what is turning out to be a group of death.
Ireland’s historic victory against England at the MCG, which is perhaps their best T20I victory in men’s cricket, has given Andrew Balbirnie’s team an opportunity to shock the field in Group 1. However, if the Irish are unable to defeat a dangerous Australian team, that opportunity will be lost. Australia was in a precarious situation as a result of the crushing loss they suffered to New Zealand in their opening group game, as well as the effect it had on their NRR. Australia therefore would not only be looking for a win but a win that can boost their NRR.
