Afghanistan were defeated by Australia in their final T20 World Cup 2022 match on Friday, November 4 at the Adelaide Oval. Afghanistan had already been eliminated from contention for a semi-final position after failing to win any of their first four Super 12 Group 1 games, and their World Cup campaign concluded with a loss to Australia. They were unlucky in the tournament as their two games at the MCG were abandoned.

Australia batted first and set a daunting 169-run mark at the Adelaide Oval, with pacers Naveen-ul-Haq getting three wickets and Fazalhaq Farooqi taking two. Afghanistan hitters put up an admirable fight till the end while pursuing the target, but finished just four runs short. Despite losing the game, the Afghan cricket team earned the hearts of many people for their efforts against the strong Australian team. Rashid Khan was at the centre of things on what is his home ground when he plays for Adelaide strikers in the BBL.

Afghanistan is in line to qualify for the World Cup

Afghanistan will next go to Sri Lanka for a three-match One-Day International series beginning on November 25. They are yet to face India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka in the ODI super league. They are on course to directly for the 50-over WC to be held next year in India. Former Afghanistan captain Asghar Afghan also recommended the team to begin focusing on the next World Cup as soon as possible. It comes on the back of Nabi resigning as captain citing issues with selections.

“The cricket board and top management should bring in good coaches who can travel to Afghanistan and should not be running behind the coach with the entire team. Afghanistan’s fans love cricket so much and the situation in the country is all normal now. So if they don’t start preparation immediately then Afghanistan will not qualify for the upcoming World Cup,”

Crictracker quoted Afghan as saying after their defeat to Australia.
