Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom was born on 24 November 1982. She is a former Rajya Sabha member, politician, and amateur boxer from India. Kom is the only female boxer to have won the World Amateur Boxing Championship six times, the only female boxer to have won a medal in each of the first seven World Championships, and the only boxer (male or female) to have won eight World Championship medals. She was the only female boxer from India to make it to the 2012 Summer Olympics, where she competed in the flyweight (51 kg) division and took home a bronze medal. She was also ranked No. 1 in the world. The International Boxing Association (amateur) (AIBA) lists the No.1 female light flyweight.

Kom briefly stopped boxing after getting married. Kom started her workouts after giving birth to her first child. She won a silver medal at the 2008 Asian Women’s Boxing Championship in India and a fourth consecutive gold medal at the 2008 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in China. She then won a gold medal at the 2009 Asian Indoor Games in Vietnam.

At the 2010 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Barbados and the 2010 Asian Women’s Boxing Championship in Kazakhstan, Kom won gold medals, making it five straight victories for her at the competition. After AIBA discontinued the 46 kg weight class, she competed in Barbados in the 48 kg weight division. She competed in the 51 kg division and took home a bronze medal at the 2010 Asian Games. In 2011, she won the Asian Women’s Cup in China’s 48 kg division, taking home the gold.

She, Sanjay, and Harshit Jain had the privilege of carrying the Queen’s Baton during the opening ceremony run in the stadium for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi on October 3, 2010. Women’s boxing was not a part of the Commonwealth Games, so she was unable to participate. After the world body decided to allow women’s boxing in only three weight categories—eliminating the lower weight classes—Kom, who had previously competed in the 46 and 48 kg divisions, switched to the 51 kg division.
