Mary Kom, popularly known as Magnificent Mary, is the only female boxer to hold a record-setting six times as the World Amateur Boxing Champion. Mary is the only boxer, male or female, to have won eight medals in a world championship competition. Kom was born in the Indian state of rural Manipur’s Kangathei village, Moirang Lamkhai, in the Churachandpur district. Kom attended Moirang’s Loktak Christian Model High School to complete his education. She had grown very interested in the javelin and 400-meter running. During the Asian Games in Bangkok in 1998, a fellow Manipuri named Dingko Singh took home the gold medal. She, too, was motivated and had the same idea to give boxing a shot. Her first coach was K Kosana under who she began her training. After that, she received instruction from Manipur State Boxing Coach M Narjit Singh in Imphal.
All eight AIBA World Boxing Championships have seen Kom come with a medal. The 2002 saw her claim the first of her six World Championship victories. After losing to eventual champion Nicola Adams at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Mary Kom won the bronze medal for India. Additionally, Kom was the first Indian woman to take home a gold medal from both the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the 2014 Asian Games.
Kom is a supporter of PETA India and an advocate for animal rights. In the latter part of 2013, Harper Collins released her autobiography. In 2014, Priyanka Chopra starred in the biographical film Mary Kom, which was based on the life of Mary Kom. She was proposed by the Indian president in 2016 for election to the Rajya Sabha. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports appointed Mary Kom as a national observer for boxing in March 2017. Kom was born on November 24, 1982, in Sagang, Manipur. She had always been interested in running and javelin throwing. She began working out in Imphal with K Kosana Meitei as her trainer.
Brand endorsements are her other main source of income. She was selected as the 2019 women’s training brand ambassador for PUMA. Mary Kom and her husband were signed by Nestle India Ltd to promote the Nestle everyday brand of dry milk powder. Additionally, she supports BSNL and the healthcare company Herbal Life.
