Due to a questionable knockout decision, a Danish referee was pulled out of the International Boxing Association (IBA) Women’s World Championships. The Italian side was enraged when their top seed, Assunta Canfora, faced a count before the fight was stopped by referee Kent Hansen in support of Camila Gabriela Camilo Bravo of Colombia before the conclusion of the first round. Canfora did not accept the judgment and rushed off the ring once it was announced. Renzini Emanuele, the head coach of the Italian team, protested the referee’s handling of the fight and asserted that his athlete was winning the round. Emanuele criticized the referee’s performance during the fight, which led to Hansen’s expulsion. He referred to the evaluation referee’s clear effort and voiced his disgust that such injustices against boxers continue to occur in every competition.

The judgment and decision of referee in a Boxing

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was concerned about judging and refereeing when it chose to exclude the IBA from the boxing tournament at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The IOC suspended the governing organization due to ongoing concerns about governance, financial transparency and sustainability, as well as the integrity of its refereeing and judging processes. Following questionable results, all 36 of the Rio 2016 referees and judges were prohibited from serving as officials in Tokyo 2020. Following the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Canadian attorney Richard McLaren conducted an investigation and discovered that bout manipulation persisted undoubtedly at several important boxing events.

Due to persistent issues with the IBA’s governance, the IOC is planning to host boxing events in Paris in 2024. However, the sport has been excluded from the planned Los Angeles 2028 schedule. The controversy that has surrounded the sport in recent years has played a role in this choice. The IOC is determined to ensure fair play and transparency in boxing competitions and is taking a harsh stance on the governance, transparency, and integrity of the sport. The IBA has not yet responded to the referee’s dismissal, but in the light of this scandal, it is certain to come under more scrutiny about its refereeing and judging procedures.
