How has Russia and Belarus performed on their comeback?

Russia collected three medals, while Belarus took one in their first World Championships since the International Boxing Association (IBA) overturned their ban. A number of nations boycotted the competition as a result of the IBA’s contentious decision to permit Russian and Belarusian boxers to compete while flying their national flags and singing their national songs. Nataliya Sychugova and Anastasia Demurchian prevailed in their quarterfinal matches at light welterweight and light middleweight, demonstrating that Russia has had some success despite facing such circumstances. Following the withdrawal of Turkey’s Mihriban Guneri, Diana Pyatak also went to the heavyweight semifinals without exchanging a blow at the ongoing Women’s World Boxing Championships 2023.

Before that, the team had won five medals in that competition.

Boxing Australia decided not to boycott the Women’s World Boxing Championships 2023 despite the presence of boxers from Russia and Belarus, which prompted 11 national governing bodies to take the action. Head coach Santiago Nieva emphasized that they intended to “keep out of politics” in their decision. Nieva, who took over at Australia in May 2022 after stepping down as head coach of India’s men’s team, has obviously had a significant effect on the group.
