The Delhi High Court has recently rejected an interim application submitted by three boxers, Manju Rani, Poonam Poonia, and Shiksha Narwal. They had challenged their non-selection in the Indian boxing team for the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships. The court ruled that the selected 12-member team can participate in the event, which is hosted by India for a record third time. It also directed the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) to keep the names of the three boxers as ‘reserves’ for the Worlds.

The BFI counsels had submitted the ‘evaluation test’ papers filled by high performance director Bernard Dunne and the chief national coaches CA Kuttappa and Bhaskar Bhatt, which included the medals won by selected boxers Nitu Ghanghas, Preeti, and Jasmine Lamboria at the international and national level. The court was satisfied with the selection and dismissed the interim application for the petitioners.

Manju Rani, Poonam Poonia, and Shiksha Narwal had approached the court, claiming that they were wrongly left out of the team for the Women’s World Boxing Championships 2023. In Manju’s weight category, Nitu Ghanghas, the Birmingham Commonwealth Games gold medalist, was selected, while Preeti made the cut ahead of Shiksha in her weight division. Similarly, in Poonam’s weight division, Jaismine Lamboria, the Birmingham Commonwealth Games bronze winner, was selected.
