Bernard Dunne, an Irish high-performance director for India, supported his decision to choose boxers based on their performance at training camp. Dunne stated that Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohain have secured their spots for the Asian games in 2023 from India. Bernard Dunne, the India’s director of high performance, revealed it on Saturday. Bernard Dunne said,” according to the policy, those who win gold and silver at this event are chosen to compete in the Asian Games in Olympic weight divisions.” He further added, “However, anything can happen between now and the Asian Games; someone could get hurt or ill. We must therefore train our Nos. 2 and 3 boxers in those weight classes as well. You ought to be prepared to leave if asked to. We must ensure that everyone is paying attention.”

Bernard Dunne on Nitu’s selection

When Bernard Dunne was asked about Nitu he said,” athletes in non-Olympic weight classes would be permitted to switch divisions within the camp.” When Dunne stated this in the interview, Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohain, had reached the finals in the weight classes of 50 kg and 75 kg, respectively. According to Dunne, they would now proceed directly to the Asian Games 2022. Selection will be based on evaluations made during training for the other Olympic weight categories – 54kg, 57kg, 60kg, and 66kg.

He further added that Nitu’s responsibility is to ensure that she maintains her attention on her current task. Nitu Ghanghas (48kg) won the first gold for India in the women’s world boxing championship in 2023. Nitu would now have to wait until she gets her chance according to the selection guidelines of the Indian Boxing Federation (BFI).

Evaluation Process will continue

“We will continue the evaluation meanwhile, we will also use very objective metrics, and the boxers in the camp push themselves every week. The best chance for each athlete to be ranked first is what I am here to do whereas, they must seize this chance to prove to the group that they are the best member,” he added. The former Irish champion admitted that choosing the best team for India was a challenging task.

“After three rounds, judges will decide which boxer is the best when we hold selection trials. The system we currently have empowers the coaches. Who see the boxers day in and day out and allows those who best know the athletes to decide on selection,” he said. “What happens if an athlete becomes ill before the trials? Three national champions unsuccessfully petitioned the Delhi high court over the controversial new selection policy.
