The Tasmania JackJumpers will go against Cairns Taipans in the NBL Australia match on October 3 at MyState Bank Arena (Hobart). The weakened Phoenix were guided by South East Melbourne captain Kyle Adnam to a nail-biting 84-79 victory over Tasmania, who finished second in the season’s grand final. The NBL22 of South East Melbourne was characterized by its inability to maintain a lead, and it appeared that old habits were going to crumble when Tasmania knotted the scores in the last period after the Phoenix had led by as many as 18. But Josh Magette’s horrifying moment, when he was penalized for waiting too long to cross the halfway mark, destroyed the JackJumpers’ fine work.
Deflated after all the effort they had put into getting back into the game, Junior Madut hit a layup off a pass from Creek, and Adnam then provided a fantastic moment by putting Tassie star Jack McVeigh on skates before draining a step-back three. The 28-year-old scored 30 points for the first time in an NBL game, and he said that when the JackJumpers evened the score, it was game on. Up until the last minute of the third quarter, the Phoenix mainly kept a double-digit lead. However, Tassie immigrant Rashard Kelly came alive and scored the next 13 JackJumpers points to tie the game.

Although McVeigh and Magette scored a tonne of points in the last minutes, the Phoenix defeated NBL22’s demons in a tough way, with Junior Madut playing a crucial role. Six three-pointers were part of Adnam’s game-high 30 points, while Creek scored 23. Sean McDonald, a developing player for the Jackies, demonstrated his prowess with 11 points in addition to the brilliant performance of McVeigh (20) and Kelly (18) for the Jackies. The Phoenix take against Illawarra on Thursday, while the JackJumpers play Cairns on Monday. They are both still without injured players Gary Browne, Trey Kell, and Ryan Broekhoff.
