Poland will take on Latvia in the 2022 FIBA U-20 Women’s European Championship on July 12. On the opening day of the competition at the FIBA U20 Women’s European Championship, the curtain was opened in Sopron with Latvia defeating Serbia and championship favorites France and Spain living up to the expectations. With their defense smothering their opponents, France cruised to a decisive 72-49 Group A victory against the Netherlands. Louise Bussiere led all scorers with 15 points, including 12 from beyond the arc, while Pauline Astier finished with 14 points and 5 assists. As they bulldozed their way past Lithuania 80-40 in Group C, Spain also sent a message. Along with faltering defensively, their opponents committed a startling 46 turnovers.

Spain’s hegemony was summed up by Mama Dembele’s 6 steals, while Noa Maria Djiu, another comrade, scored 13 points. In a thrilling Group D matchup with Serbia, Latvia prevailed 65-64, holding on for the victory thanks to a huge block by Nikola Priede in the final seconds. Marta Leimane led the way for Latvia with 15 points, while Nevena Vuckovic had a double-double in the loss with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Hosts Hungary had their first-ever defeat as the Czech Republic outlasted them 63-50 in Group A, with the home team making only 1 of 20 long shots.

For their respective teams, Valentyna Kadlecova and Eszter Madar both scored 12 points. Italy made a strong first impression by defeating Sweden 62-47 in Group B. One of the better performances of the day was made by Ilaria Panzera. With 14 points, 8 rebounds, 8 steals, and 7 assists, Panzera (pictured) came very close to a quadruple-double. Team leader Caterina Gilli scored 16 points. In Group B as also, Finland defeated Belgium in the final seconds. With just over a minute left in the game, it was tied, and they scored the final 7 points to win 67-60. With 18 points, Saama Kujala excelled. In other games, Maria Leonor Goncalves led Portugal with four triples as they easily defeated Ireland 68-47. She scored 14 points, which Ella O’Donnell also scored for Ireland. With a huge 28 points and 6 assists, Magdalena Szymkiewicz demonstrated her class for Poland as they defeated Bulgaria 90-75 in Group C. Kamila Borkowska also scored 20 points, which was impressive.
