The Phoenix Mercury will head to the Michelob Ultra Arena for their first playoff game against the Las Vegas Aces on Wednesday. This is going to be an interesting matchup as the Mercury are an experienced team that will be looking to get to their fourth WNBA championship. While the Las Vegas Aces are still in search of their first WNBA title.
Heading into the encounter, Mercury have a lot of things to worry about. They are severely short-handed as they will miss out on some of their most important players. Momentum is also not in favor of the team from Phoenix as they lost the last game of their regular season to the Chicago Sky. Jennie Simms and Megan Gustafson led the way with 12 points each. But their efforts were not enough to prevent an 82-67 loss on the night. Phoenix will be looking to make the best with the roster. It is certainly going to be tough, but Mercury is a side that is well versed to tackle such situations.
The Las Vegas Aces, on the other hand, are headed into the encounter after winning the last three of their regular season games. This helped them grab the top spot and set up an encounter with the depleted Phoenix team. The Aces have some of the best players in the league. Chelsea Gray, Kelsey Plum and A’ja Wilson are all going to be key for them going forward. If these three step up and deliver, the Aces are going to be a tough side to defeat. Although the Aces are favourites to come out with a win, they can’t take it too lightly as these are the playoffs.
The Phoenix Mercury will take the court without Diana Taurasi and Kia Nurse, who have both been ruled out due to injuries. Skylar Diggins-Smith has pulled out of the season due to personal reasons. Forward Kaela Davis is questionable as she is still recovering from an ankle injury. Meanwhile, the only player that will be out for the Aces is Dearica Hamby, who is out for a while due to a knee contusion.
