Philippines will take on India in the FIBA Asia Cup on July 15. In the 2022 Fiba Asia Cup on Wednesday at Istora Senayan in Jakarta, Indonesia, Gilas Pilipinas battled back from a 22-point deficit in the fourth quarter but still fell short against Lebanon, 95-80. Carl Tamayo didn’t give up and scored seven of the Filipinos’ 11 consecutive points to reduce the gap to 82-71 at the 5:26 mark after Yousef Khayat gave Lebanon its largest advantage, 22 points, at 82-60 with 8:18 left. With 4:42 remaining, SJ Belangel completed a three-point play to end the 14-1 run and cut the deficit to nine, 83-74. Wael Arakji added another three-point play to give the Lebanese a break with 1:50 left, but Hayk Gyokchan stopped the bleeding with an and-one. In the final 50 seconds, Jonathan Arledge hit the game-winning three-pointer.

Lebanese scoring leader Arakji had 20 points and four assists. Gyokchyan scored 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds, while Arledge added 19 points, six rebounds, two blocks, and two steals to join fellow opening-day victor New Zealand, which destroyed India 100-47, atop Group D. Against Friday at 4 p.m., the Filipinos take on India in an effort to recover (Manila time). To give Gilas a 27-22 lead after the first quarter, Belangel scored nine of his team’s 17 points during it. The Lebanese then held them to 12 points in the second quarter and drew away in the third. With 15 points from four triple-doubles and four rebounds, Bobby Ray Parks Jr. was also crucial for the Philippines, while Tamayo finished with 15 points, six boards, three blocks, three assists, and a steal.
