The Cairns Taipans have announced that Australian guard Ben Ayre has signed a two-year deal (with a club option for a third year) to play in the National Basketball League. This follows an outstanding season with the Taipans’ feeder team during the offseason and a memorable stint as an injury replacement. For the Cairns Marlins, which has included a 43-point effort over Rip City, four more 30+ point performances, and a run to the NBL1 North playoffs, Ayre has been averaging 24.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game. Ayre’s decision to stay in Cairns for the off-season has put him in close proximity to the Taipans’ coaching staff. According to Head Coach Adam Forde, Ayre has been put to the test several times to show that he deserves to be on the team.

Ayre was a training player with the Taipans until being promoted to the active squad in April as an injured substitute. During his eight-game stint, he set records. Following his outstanding effort in Melbourne, the 26-year-old became only the second Taipan in club history to score 20 points and dished out 10 assists, briefly taking the lead in the NBL’s three-point percentage (42.1). Ayre, a Victoria native, played for the Knox Raiders in the NBL1 South past season. Over the course of 11 games, he averaged 12 points, 3.5 assists, and 2.5 rebounds. As a developing player, he has also played for the Adelaide 36ers, BC Maeikiai (Lithuania), Nunawading Spectres, and Bendigo Braves. With one restricted (import) place left, Ayre joins Tahjere McCall, DJ Hogg, Sam Waardenburg, Jonah Antonio, Lat Mayen, Bul Kuol, Keanu Pinder, Majok Deng, and Mirko Djeric on the roster.
