The match is of NorthPort Batang Pier vs Phoenix Fuelmasters. They will square off against each other on Wednesday at the MOA Arena to start their PBA Commissioner’s Cup comeback campaigns after similar 3-8 finishes in the all-Filipino tournament. In their 5:45 p.m. matchup, the Fuel Masters debut Kaleb Wesson while the Batang Pier bring in balik-import Prince Ibeh as the main event in the PBA midseason tournament’s return from a two-year layoff. Reuniting with Ibeh, the 6-10 mastodon who helped the Batang Pier to a historic second seeding in the most recent PBA Commissioner’s Cup in 2019, was an obvious choice for NorthPort.
Unfortunately, the Batang Pier were subsequently paired in the quarterfinals with the formidable San Miguel Beermen. Ibeh and his teammates wasted the opportunity to defeat the squad that advanced all the way to the final. Ibeh, a more experienced player who is now 28 years old, is making a comeback in the PBA to complete some unfinished business. He’s working with the rest of coach Pido Jarencio’s chargers, including Robert Bolick, Arwind Santos, Kevin Ferrer, and Roi Sumang, as they look for a spark to help them get off to the great start they want following a challenging Philippine Cup.
The Fuel Masters aim for the same, despite the loss of longtime leader Matthew Wright. Wesson, the youngest of the current crop of recruits at 23, is expected to hold down the fort alongside Jason Perkins and Sean Anthony. Cameron Krutwig of Blackwater and Wesson are both 23 years old, although the Phoenix immigrant is seven months younger. The product of Westernville, Ohio, is bringing his skills to the PBA after earlier this year playing for the Maccabi Rishon LeZion squad in the Israeli Basketball Premier League.
