The New Zealand Breakers will go against South East Melbourne in the NBL Australia match on October 20 at Spark Arena (Auckland). The NBL season has begun for the New Zealand Breakers. They were the underdogs of the opposition a season ago. The New Zealand team finished the season with just five victories from 28 games, placing them at the bottom of the standings. This year, the situation is different. The Breakers are on the rise after four games. The New Zealand team improved to 3-1 on Monday night, scoring their third straight victory with an 88-62 victory over the Illawarra Hawks. Barry Brown Jr., the team’s top scorer, was out due to hamstring soreness, but the Breakers offense started well.
As they have done throughout the whole season, the Breakers attacked and created excellent looks with pick-and-roll plays. Despite their struggles from beyond the arc, they worked hard to create solid looks and capitalize on them when they were close. The game ended with Will McDowell-White finishing with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists. Ball movement gave players good looks, and players like Dererk Pardon and Tom Vodanovich grabbed offensive rebounds to keep plays going. McDowell-White was impressive once more, establishing the offense well and doing a lot of rebounding work.

The Breakers had led at the end of the first quarter of every game they had played so far this season heading into the game. But after a sluggish beginning, it appeared that might change. It only appeared that way for a brief period, though, as the Breakers quickly established a rhythm on offense and started to see the ball go in the hoop, finishing the quarter with a 21-16 advantage. In the second quarter, they turned up the intensity, defensively shutting down the Hawks, and turning their possessions into points on the opposite end of the floor. Even though they only made four of their 17 attempts from three-point range in the first half, the Breakers led by as many as 24 points in the second quarter.
New Zealand Breakers: Izayah Mauriohooho, Robert Loe, William McDowell-White, Jarrell Brantley, Barry Brown Jr.
South East Melbourne: Kyle Adnam, Grant Anticevich, Malcolm Bernard, Ryan Broekhoff, Gary Browne
