Sweden will fly from Pittsburgh to Rome overnight on Saturday, August 6 for FIBA European Championship and spend two days there with guided tours of St. Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museum, and the Sistine Chapel. Prior to leaving for Florence on Monday, August 8, Pitt will play its first game of the tour in Rome. On Tuesday, August 9, the team and travel party will board a high-speed train to Florence, where they will participate in guided tours of the Duomo, Ponte Vecchio, and San Lorenzo Leather Market. On Wednesday, August 10, they will then have some free time in the city to stroll about and take in the local culture.
On Thursday, August 11, Pitt will travel to Vicenza for their second game of the tour. The group will depart the next day for Trieste, where they will spend two days doing guided tours of the city, visiting Piran, Slovenia, and taking a fast day excursion to a beach in Portoroz, Slovenia. On August 14 and 15, the group will spend its final two days in Venice, where they will take guided tours of the Doge’s Palace, the Rialto Bridge, and St. Mark’s Square. On Tuesday, August 16, everyone will get the chance to take a gondola ride around the Grand Canal and eat one final supper in Italy before flying back to Pittsburgh.
The three freshmen for the Panthers this year will provide the team’s squad with some much-needed shooting and scoring skills. Aislin Malcolm, a local star, stays close to home after finishing one of the finest high school careers by a WPIAL player, leading Chartiers Valley to a 110-7 overall record, including a 64-game winning streak that set a state record, and won three WPIAL championships and one state championship. She finished her career as her school’s all-time top scorer (1,770 points) and all-time leader in three-pointers made while being awarded All-State recognition three times (280).

Washenitz finished his outstanding career with 2,000 points, 781 rebounds, 512 steals, and 464 assists. He was named the West Virginia Player of the Year twice and was selected for four All-State teams. She finished her senior year with a career-high 29.2 points per game and guided her team to one FIBA championship. In her senior year, Strickland, a three-sport standout in basketball, softball, and track, guided her team to a 28-9 record and a spot in the state championship game while averaging a team-best 17.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.5 steals on the season.
