China will take on South Korea in the FIBA Asia Cup on July 12. In the men’s final at Marina Bay Sands, Australia conquered New Zealand 21-17 with eight points apiece from Andrew Steel and Daniel Johnson. With 42 points from five games, Jesse Wagstaff was crowned the tournament’s most valuable player when he laid up to seal the victory. He was joined on the Team of the Tournament by Jiaren Zhao, 23, of China, who guided his nation to a podium finish, and Nikau McCullough of New Zealand. They beat the Philippines 20-18 after a hard-fought match, repeating their performance from 2019. Zeyi Liu scored nine points thanks to some excellent play in the paint, and Almond Vosotros of the Philippines finished the tournament strong with eight points.

China won the women’s competition after shutting out reigning champion Australia to win 14-10 and earning bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and the FIBA 3×3 World Cup. China defeated Australia’s aspirations of winning both the men’s and women’s doubles thanks to a game-high six points from Zhi Ting Zhang and five more points from Kun Huang. After being selected for the World Cup team tournament, Lili Wang once again showed her talent, earning her the title of most valuable player. Kimberley Pierre-Louis, who led defending champion Indonesia to a surprising podium finish with 54 points from five games to lead the rankings, and emerging sensation Maley of Australia join Wang on the team. As they defeated Japan 21-17, Indonesia became the first nation to take home a medal from the Asia Cup.
