Australia vs Japan FIBA Asia Cup match will be held on July 21. With a decisive victory over Syria, New Zealand advanced to the quarterfinals of the FIBA Asia Cup. Japan ended a lengthy losing run to the Philippines. New Zealand jumped out to a fast start and kept expanding their lead till they won by a score of 97-58. Syria was kept without a goal for virtually the first five minutes of the game as the Tall Blacks jumped out to an early 12-0 lead. From there, they traveled the remaining distance in comfort. Flynn Cameron, a talented young point guard for New Zealand, put out another all-around effort of 14 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 rebounds. While Taine Murray led the squad with 16 points, New Zealand’s guards were busy throughout the game as Taylor Britt contributed 10 points and 6 assists on perfect shooting.

Omar Idelbi and Anthouny Bakar scored 10 points each to lead Syria in scoring as the squad exited the tournament. As a result of New Zealand’s advancement to the Quarterfinals, Korea and that team will meet again in the Third-Place Game 0 of the Asia Cup 2017. Korea won both meetings between those two teams. Japan outplayed the Philippines 102-81 after a bruising match. Early on, the Akatsuki Five established the tone by pulling away to a 32-16 advantage in the opening quarter. This was sufficient to prevent Gilas from gathering momentum as they attempted to retake the lead. Early on, Yuta Watanabe was a standout, making things happen on both ends of the floor. He would eventually have to exit the game with what seemed to be an ankle injury in the second half, scoring 15 points, pulling down 9 rebounds, and dishing out 3 assists.
