The 45th World Junior Wrestling Championships (U20) got underway on August 15 in Sofia, Bulgaria, and will last until August 21, 2022. Above 600 young wrestlers will be eyeing to bring glory to their respective countries. The three categories in this competition are Men’s freestyle, Greco-Roman, and women’s wrestling. This event is for the junior age category wrestlers whose age is between 18 and 20. The United World Wrestling (UWW) organizes the tournament every year. The tournament was held for the first time in 1969.

With nine, seven, and six gold medals, Russia, the United States, and Iran won the most medals in the 2021 edition. India finished at the 11th position by acquiring a total number of 11 medals (4 silver and 7 bronze).

World U20 Wrestling Championships 2022: India Contingent

Four freestyle wrestlers started India’s campaign on a high at the World U20 Wrestling Championships, bringing home the bronze medals. While Mahendra Babasaheb Gaikwad advanced to the finals of the men’s 125kg and assured India at least a silver medal. Abhishek Dhaka defeated Ukraine’s Heorhii Kazanzhy by 8-5 in the bronze medal playoff. Sujeet who was considered a prime favorite for the gold had to settle for bronze. He lost in the semis against Azerbaijan’s Ziraddin Bayramov by 6-2. He had won all the three previous bouts without conceding a single point. Both Mulayam Yadav and Niraj went down to the eventual gold medallists but got hold of the bronze medal at the end. Mulayam lost by a very narrow margin of 5-3 in the semis but won the bronze medal play-off via technical superiority.
