Bajrang Punia was born on 26 February 1994. He is an Indian freestyle wrestler and competes in the 65 kg weight division. Punia defeated Kazakhstan’s Daulet Niyazbekov by an 8-0 score to earn a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Punia is the only wrestler from India to have taken home four medals from the World Wrestling Championships.

He was born in Haryana, India’s Khudan, Jhajjar region. He started wrestling at the age of seven, and his father encouraged him to continue. His family lacked the resources for conventional sports. He was forced to participate in unpaid sports like wrestling and kabaddi. Punia was enrolled at a young age in a neighborhood mud wrestling school by his family because his father, who was also a wrestler.

Punia began to miss class to attend wrestling practice. In 2008, he traveled to Chattarsal Stadium, where Ramphal Mann trained him. His family relocated to Sonepat in 2015 so that he could attend a Sports Authority of India regional center. He is employed by the Indian Railways at the moment as an OSD Sports Gazetted Officer. In the men’s freestyle 60 kg semifinal match in New Delhi, India, Bajrang was defeated 3-1 by Hwang Ryong-hak of North Korea and took home the bronze medal.

He defeated Japanese opponent Shogo Maeda in the Round of 16 by 3-1. Iran’s Morad Hassan was his opponent in the quarterfinals, and he defeated him 3-1 to advance to the semifinals. Bajrang earned a spot in the bronze-medal match through the repechage round and went on to win the men’s freestyle 60 kg competition in Budapest, Hungary. He defeated Mongolian Enkhsaikhany Nyam-Ochir 9-2 there.

He faced Vladimir Dubov of Bulgaria in the Round of 32, and Dubov defeated him 7-0. The Bulgarian grappler then faced Japanese opponent Shogo Maeda and won a walkover, advancing to the final match. With a 10-3 victory over the Romanian in his next match, Bajrang advanced to the bronze medal match. His next opponent was Ivan Guidea. In the 65 kg final match at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, Bajrang Punia decisively defeated Lachlan McNeil of Canada to win the gold medal.
