Mirko Filipovic was born on September 10, 1974, in Vinkovci, Croatia, which was then part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. He was reared in a working-class home with his three-year-old sister. Mirko grew up competing in track and field, specifically the sprint events (100m, 200m, and 400m dashes). He began training in his parent’s garage with his father’s boxing equipment and weights after witnessing Jean-Claude Van Damme’s performance in the film Bloodsport.

Filipovic’s father died in 1994 when Mirko was 19 years old, and the year before Filipovic had joined the Croatian Army as a radio telegraphist. His desire to practice with the Croatian national kickboxing team was authorized when he wrote a letter to the commander of his military camp. Filipovic called it one of the happiest days of his life. Following that, he pursued a professional kickboxing career.

Mirko Filipovic UFC Career

Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipović’s stint in the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) was not as successful as his time in Pride FC. Cro Cop made his UFC debut in 2007, following the acquisition of Pride FC by the UFC.

Initially, Cro Cop’s arrival generated significant buzz and high expectations. However, he struggled to replicate his dominant performances from his Pride FC days. In his first UFC fight, he faced Gabriel Gonzaga in a highly anticipated matchup. To the surprise of many, Gonzaga landed a devastating head kick, knocking out Cro Cop in the first round.

Cro Cop’s UFC career continued with mixed results. He earned victories over opponents like Eddie Sanchez and Mostapha Al-Turk but also suffered defeats to fighters such as Cheick Kongo and Junior dos Santos. Although he showcased moments of his striking brilliance, his overall performance in the UFC fell short of the expectations set by his Pride FC run.

One notable highlight of Cro Cop’s UFC tenure was his rematch with Gabriel Gonzaga in 2009. This time, Cro Cop emerged victorious, securing a knockout win and avenging his earlier loss. The win provided a brief resurgence in his UFC career, but he still struggled to find consistent success against top-tier heavyweights.

In 2011, Cro Cop announced his retirement from mixed martial arts. However, he made a comeback in 2015, signing with the UFC once again. This second stint was relatively short-lived, as he faced two losses to fighters such as Gabriel Gonzaga and Anthony Hamilton, and then retired for good in 2019.

While Cro Cop’s UFC career did not reach the same heights as his time in Pride FC, he remains a respected figure in the sport. His contributions to the heavyweight division, particularly in Pride FC, solidified his legacy as one of the most feared strikers and iconic fighters in mixed martial arts history.
