Jamahal Hill was born on May 19, 1991. He is a trained mixed martial artist from the United States. He is the reigning UFC Light Heavyweight Champion and fights in the Light Heavyweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

Background

When he was twelve, Hill moved to Grand Rapids. He completed his education at Wyoming, Michigan’s Rogers High School. Hill began participating in professional mixed martial arts competitions in 2017 after forgoing a basketball career at Davenport University.

Early Career

Hill began his professional career in 2017, and in his first five fights, he went 5-0, with four of them taking place under the KnockOut Promotions brand. Dequan Townsend, a future UFC fighter, was defeated by Hill in just his fourth professional fight, despite Townsend having made 26 prior professional appearances. Hill subsequently got the call to compete in Dana White’s Contender Series 21 in 2019. There, Hill won by using ground and pound in the second round to defeat opponent Alexander Poppeck and secure his UFC contract.

UFC Career

Jamahal Hill made a name for himself by outclassing Alexander Poppeck in Dana White’s Contender Series 21. He obtained a UFC deal after winning by TKO. On January 25, 2020, at UFC Fight Night: Blaydes vs. dos Santos, Hill faced Darko Stosic in his UFC debut. Hill prevailed after a unanimous decision. He faced Klidson Abreu in his second octagon outing on May 30, 2020, during Woodley vs. Burns on UFC on ESPN. Hill’s victory via knockout that evening was revoked when a marijuana test revealed a positive result.

On December 5, 2020, “Sweet Dreams” faced up against former championship rival Ovince Saint Preux at UFC on ESPN: Hermansson vs. Vettori. The fight was won by Jamahal Hill in the second round via TKO. Hill suffered his first career loss at UFC 263: Adesanya vs. Vettori II at the hands of Paul Craig. On June 12, 2021, the fight took place at Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona, in the United States.

Hill won again at UFC on ESPN: Font vs. Aldo when he submitted Jimmy Crute in the first frame. On December 4, 2021, the match took place at UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada, in the United States. At UFC Fight Night: Walker vs. Hill, “Sweet Dreams” defeated Johnny Walker in the opening frame of the main fight. On February 19, 2022, the event was held at UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada, in the United States. On August 6, 2022, Hill defeated Thiago Santos via TKO at UFC on ESPN: Santos vs. Hill.

On March 11, 2023, Hill and Anthony Smith were slated to square off at UFC Fight Night 221. Hill was then rescheduled to headline UFC 283 on January 21, 2023, where he would have faced Glover Teixeira for the vacant UFC Light Heavyweight Championship. He was the first graduate of Dana White’s Contender Series to win a UFC championship after winning the fight and the belt by unanimous decision. He won the Fight of the Night prize for this battle.
