When Francis Ngannou decided to leave the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), speculation arose as to whether he would be able to secure a lucrative contract elsewhere. Daniel Cormier was one among those skeptics who expressed uncertainty about Ngannou’s chances outside of the UFC. The popular belief was incorrect, though, as Ngannou went on to negotiate a lucrative deal with the Professional Fighters League (PFL) and book a well-publicized boxing battle against Tyson Fury.

Daniel Cormier recently used the chance to apologize to Ngannou for having doubted his abilities and what he could accomplish outside of the UFC. Cormier’s initial skepticism did not surprise Brendan Schaub, a current MMA analyst and former UFC fighter.

Brendan Schaub highlights the influence of UFC affiliation on Daniel Cormier’s opinion

Schaub, understanding the dynamics of the industry, pointed out that Cormier’s association with the UFC influenced his opinion. As Cormier works for the UFC-owned ESPN platform, Schaub believed it was unlikely for him to openly praise Ngannou’s decision to leave the promotion. Schaub emphasized that when you work for a particular organization, there are certain expectations and limitations to what you can say or support publicly.

Using his own experience as an example, Schaub explained that during his time with Showtime, he was expected to advocate for Bellator and even defend Conor McGregor, despite any personal opinions he might have had. Schaub recognized that it is part of the job to align with the interests of the organization that employs you, and it shouldn’t necessarily be seen as selling out.

While Schaub expressed his understanding of Cormier’s situation, he also expressed his disapproval of the limitations placed on individuals in the industry. He admitted that it was a fact of the industry, but he didn’t enjoy it.
