Background

Belal Muhammad grew up in Chicago, Illinois, and was raised by parents of Palestinian descent. Muhammad grew up alongside his four siblings, including an older brother and sister as well as two younger brothers.
Muhammad got enrolled at the University of Illinois but he did not continue on with his degree and later made his debut in MMA after defeating Steve Carl with a TKO in the Titan FC Welterweight Championship. Muhammad later joined the UFC in 2016.

Early Career

Belal Muhammad started his combat sports career as a high school wrestler, where he contended in the 152-pound weight class. After graduating from high school, he briefly attended the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, before ultimately leaving the University to pursue a career in boxing.

As an amateur boxer, Muhammad had a record of 5- 1 and won a number of indigenous titles. still, he ultimately transitioned to Mixed Martial Arts( MMA), where he quickly established himself as a promising prospect.

Muhammad began his professional MMA career in 2012, contending in Titan FC and Bellator. He quickly raked up a record of 9-1 with his first loss being on his UFC debut where he was a short-notice replacement against Alan Jouban.

UFC Career

Belal Muhammad has been contending in the UFC since 2016 and has come a mainstay in the welterweight division. He made his debut on short notice against Alan Jouban and lost the fight via unanimous decision. But he managed to win his second fight against Augusto Montana via TKO.

Since then, Muhammad has continued to impress, putting together an emotional record of 22 wins and 3 losses with 1 no-contest.

In UFC 213, Belal Muhammad clashed with Jordan Mein. The bout ended with Belal’s triumph via unanimous decision in round 3.

Belal Muhammad won against contenders like Dhiego Lima and Lyman Good in a similar fashion via unanimous decision.

In 2020, Muhammad was listed to face off against Leon Edwards, a top-ranked welterweight, in the main event of a UFC Fight Night card. Unfortunately, the fight was stopped in the alternate round due to an accidental eye poke by Edwards, leaving Muhammad unfit to continue. The bout was declared a no-contest.

Since then, Muhammad has fought against numerous opponents like Demian Maia in UFC 263, Stephen Thompson, and Vicente Luque all of which he won by unanimous decision.

In UFC 280, Belal Muhammad fought against Sean Brady which ended up with Muhammad delivering and winning over Sean Brady after a brutal slugfest. Muhammad ended up winning that fight via TKO in the second round.

Despite his setbacks, Muhammad has continued to climb the welterweight rankings and is presently ranked number 4 in the division. He has earned a character as a tough, durable fighter with excellent wrestling and striking chops, all of this along with his humble background has made him a fan favorite.

IN UFC 288 Belal is scheduled to fight against Gilbert Burns who boasts a similar record of 22 wins and 5 losses with most of them being wins via submissions and unanimous decisions.

Muhammad has expressed a desire to challenge for the welterweight title in the near future, and with his emotional performances in the octagon, it’s only a matter of time before he gets the occasion to do so.
