Cristian Garin

Cristian Garin is a professional tennis player from Chile. The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) has him ranked as high as world No. 17 in singles, which he first achieved on September 13, 2021, and he is currently Chile's No. 1. He also holds the world No. 206 doubles ranking, which he achieved on May 10, 2021. Garin became the youngest Chilean player to win an ATP Tour match when he defeated Dusan Lajovic in the first round of the 2013 VTR Open at the age of 16 years and 8 months. He won the Junior French Open in 2013, defeating Alexander Zverev in the final.

The Chilean has five ATP Tour titles, all of which he has won on clay. He had his first consistent results on the ATP Tour in early 2019, reaching three finals in five tournaments: runner-up in the 2019 Brasil Open, first ATP title at the 2019 U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships, and second title at the 2019 BMW Open. Garin won his third title at the Cordoba Open in 2020. He became the sixth Chilean man to reach the top 20 after winning his first ATP Tour 500 title at the 2020 Rio Open.

Grand Slam debut

The 25-year-old broke into the top 200 in January and climbed to world No. 187 the following month. At his first attempt, Garin made it through the Wimbledon qualifying draw. He was defeated in four sets by Jack Sock, the edition's 17th seed, in the main draw. Garin finished the year ranked 311th in the world. He won a singles match against Dominican Republic in the 2017 Davis Cup Americas Zone Group I in January, and Chile won the series 5–0. He won one singles match and lost another against Colombia in April, and Chile lost the series 3–1.

Garin made his Grand Slam main draw debut at the 2019 Australian Open, but was defeated in straight sets by David Goffin. This was also his first appearance in the year's first Grand Slam. After Australia, Cristian represented Chile in the 2019 Davis Cup rubber against Austria. Garn lost to Dennis Novak but won the decisive match against Jurij Rodionov, giving Chile its first win in Europe in over 50 years. This also qualified Chile for the 2019 Davis Cup Finals, where they were eliminated after the group stage.

Garin's 2021

Garin began 2021 by exiting the Delray Beach Open and the Argentina Open in the second round. After that, he was seeded first in his home tournament, the 2021 Chile Open. He reached the final of Chile's only ATP Tour tournament after consecutive wins over fellow Chilean Alejandro Tabilo, Juan Pablo Varillas, and Daniel Elahi Galan without dropping a set. He won his fifth title by defeating Facundo Bagnis in three sets. Before the European claycourt season, he competed in the Miami Open in 2021, losing in the second round to Marin Cilic in three tight sets.

After defeating J.I. Londero, M. McDonald, and Marcos Giron in the fourth round of the French Open, he made his best Grand Slam run of his career. Garn, seeded 17th at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, defeated Pedro Martnez in the third round to reach the fourth round for the first time in his career and the second time in a major in 2021. Since Fernando Gonzalez's run to the last eight in 2005, Garin is the first Chilean to reach the fourth round of Wimbledon.
