In a career spanning 16 years, Anders Per Jarryd has excelled in both singles and doubles categories. However, the former Swedish player has had the most success in the latter, which also includes an Olympic medal. During his professional career, he has won doubles titles at every single Grand Slam, amassing a total of eight such titles. He has topped the doubles rankings and reached a career-high singles ranking of World No. 5. Jarryd, who was born in 1961, began his professional career in 1980. The following year, he won his first tour doubles title in Linz, Austria. A year later, at Linz, he won his first top-level singles title. Jarryd started to show his potential at the highest level immediately from the time he turned pro. The Swedish player swiftly started to dominate the sport in the doubles category.
Jarryd won his maiden Grand Slam doubles title at the French Open in 1983 while teaming up with fellow Swede Hans Simonsson. It was the first of many Grand Slam doubles titles he was going to clinch in his illustrious career. Jarryd then had a productive 1984 season, winning two singles and five doubles titles. In addition, he and Stefan Edberg finished second in the men's doubles at the US Open that year.
Jarryd had his best Grand Slam singles performance in 1985. In the prestigious Wimbledon, he defeated Claudio Panatta, Scott Davis, Vincent Van Patten, Danie Visser, and overcame Heinz Gunthardt to reach the semi-finals. However, his impressive run was halted by Boris Becker in four sets. It was his high point in singles as far as Grand Slams were concerned.
The Swedish star achieved a career-high singles ranking of World No. 5 in July 1985. In that August, he became the World No. 1 in doubles ranking. Jarryd also managed to achieve his career-best finishes at the French Open and US Open that year, finishing in the fourth round and quarterfinals, respectively.
The following year – 1986 – turned out to be special for the Swede as well. He won the WCT Finals by stunningly defeating Boris Becker in the title match. Besides, he and Edberg finished runners-up in the men's doubles at the French Open.
The year 1987 was another memorable one for him as far as doubles was concerned. Jarryd won three of the four Grand Slam men's doubles titles - the Australian Open (with Edberg), the French Open (with Robert Seguso), and the US Open (partnering Edberg). He was having the time of his life in the doubles category, and soon he would have another reason to rejoice.
Jarryd was part of Sweden's Davis Cup-winning team that year. He won two singles rubbers in the final, which Sweden won 5-0 over India. Notably, Jarryd also played on three Swedish Davis Cup teams that finished runners-up in 1986, 1988, and 1989.
Jarryd and John Fitzgerald finished runner-up in the men's doubles at both the French Open and Wimbledon in 1988. That year, he won his first Olympic medal as Jarryd and Edberg clinched a bronze medal in men's doubles at the Games. He was also a member of Sweden's World Team Cup-winning team that year. Famously, Jarryd teamed up with Fitzgerald to win the men's doubles crown at Wimbledon the following year, thereby completing a career set of all four Grand Slam men's doubles titles.
Jarryd won three of the four men's doubles titles in 1991, partnering Fitzgerald to win the French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open - his final Grand Slam titles. He reached his very last Grand Slam doubles final, again with Fitzgerald, at the 1993 Australian Open before announcing his retirement from the professional tour in 1996.
