Sushil Kumar's lawyer claims “there is a conspiracy against him” in court hearing

Delhi police announced Rs 1 lakh reward for Sushil Kumar. The Olympian has been absconding since May 5 and is accused of murdering wrestler Sagar Rana. The two-time Olympics medallist had filed an anticipatory bail in Delhi’s Rohini court. The case’s hearing happened today.

Sushil Kumar and Ajay, the co-accused in the case, is charged with Section 302 (murder) and Section 308 (attempt to culpable homicide). Since the incident on May 5, Sushil Kumar has been on the run. Delhi Police also announced a prize for anyone who could tell any information about the wrestler. As per India Today, Sushil Kumar had allegedly fled to Haridwar and then to Rishikesh to evade arrest.

Senior advocate Sidharth Luthra represented Kumar. In the application filed, Kumar stated that the entire investigation took place with a “a pre-determined and biased mindset”. It also claimed he was “innocent of all wrongdoings”.

The sessions court was further told that firearms recovered from a Scorpio car and the other cars did not belong to him or his family members.

“That unfounded, baseless, scurrilous and preposterous allegations have been made against the applicant maliciously with the only motive to humiliate and injure the reputation of the applicant,” the application stated, adding he “should not be compelled to face harassment, ignominy and disgrace at the instance of baseless and unfounded allegations.”

What happened since May 4 mid-night

The police announced a reward for Ajay, who was missing and was allegedly involved in the brawl. The other accused, Prince Dalal from Jhajjar, was arrested with a double-barrel gun.

“Several teams have been formed to trace out alleged persons including Sushil Kumar. We’re probing the role of Sushil Kumar as allegations have been made against him, we sent our team to his house but he was not found,” Addl Deputy Commissioner of Police-I, NW Delhi told ANI.

On May 4 at midnight, a brawl took place in the Chhatrasal Stadium parking area. Sushil Kumar and his group allegedly assaulted Sagar Rana. He was later pronounced dead in the hospital.

Kumar however has claimed that he has nothing to do with the incident. “They weren’t our wrestlers, it happened late last night. We have informed police officials that some unknown people jumped into our premises and fought. No connection of our stadium with this incident,” he said.
