Leicester dominated the opening exchanges at the AJ Bell Stadium and went in front through a penalty try, with Sharks losing lock Dom Barrow to the sin-bin at the same time. Despite that, the home side piled pressure on an inexperienced Tigers defense and Wilkinson’s penalty reduced the arrears before Sam Dugdale crossed from close range to give Sale a 10-7 advantage. When Reid sped towards goal and Beaumont immediately slammed his way, they extended it further just after the turn for two tries in a row. However, Leicester fought back with hooker Horton at the archway and Chetham dodged a shark kick and sprinted to the line to make it 22-19. The visitors then scored a penalty kick from the post, but opted for a corner kick, with Wilkinson firing a wide shot to give Saleroom to breathe with two minutes remaining, but failed to convert. Defending his champions Worcester, who are struggling financially with his reported £25m debt, will start campaigning in Gloucester on Wednesday, while Harlequins will host his Irish in London.
