The Gloucester vs Worcester Warriors Rugby Union match will be held on September 21 at Kingsholm Stadium. Sale passed Leicester and the Wasp beat Newcastle as the 2022-23 Premiership Rugby Cup kicked off. The Sharks survived a late comeback from the Tigers, opening the game in Pool 2 as he won the game 25–19. The hosts looked good after tries from Aaron Reed and Josh Beaumont, and he led by 15 points after the break. However, a late Kieran Wilkinson penalty brought Sale home after Tom Horton and Lewis Chesham crossed to close the Tigers’ gap to just three. In another match of the evening, the Wasps beat Newcastle Falcons 35-21 at Coventry. Kieran Curran got Wasps on the scoreboard after only six minutes and Greg Fisilau extended that lead, with Michael van Vuuren adding a third try before half-time. Newcastle’s Nathan Greenwood marked his debut with a try from 45 meters out, but the home side swiftly reasserted control after Van Vuuren’s second score and Harry Craven’s try – all converted by Will Haydon-Wood.
Haydon-Wood was yellow-carded for a high tackle on Greenwood and the Falcons took advantage to register late tries through Josh Peters and Iwan Stephens, with Louie Johnson adding the extras each time. Leicester dominated the opening exchanges at the AJ Bell Stadium and went in front through a penalty try, with Sharks losing lock Dom Barrow to the sin-bin at the same time. Despite that, the home side piled pressure on an inexperienced Tigers defense and Wilkinson’s penalty reduced the arrears before Sam Dugdale crossed from close range to give Sale a 10-7 advantage. When Reid sped towards goal and Beaumont immediately slammed his way, they extended it further just after the turn for two tries in a row. However, Leicester fought back with hooker Horton at the archway and Chetham dodged a shark kick and sprinted to the line to make it 22-19. The visitors then scored a penalty kick from the post, but opted for a corner kick, with Wilkinson firing a wide shot to give Saleroom to breathe with two minutes remaining, but failed to convert. Defending his champions Worcester, who are struggling financially with his reported £25m debt, will start campaigning in Gloucester on Wednesday, while Harlequins will host his Irish in London.
