Sebastian Aho was the hero as he helped the Carolina Hurricanes record a 2-1 win over the San Jose Sharks in the NHL on Friday. Aho scored the tie-breaking goal with just 1:58 left on the clock and broke San Jose hearts as they lost their third game in a row since the start of the season.

Carolina fell behind as the Sharks scored a goal through Evgeny Svechnikov in the first period. Jaycob Megna assisted Evgeny Svechnikov and he slotted home the puck much to the surprise of Carolina’s goaltender Antti Raanta.

Forward Martin Necas equalized for the Hurricanes in the second period as he took the pass from Andrei Svechnikov and slid the puck under the legs of San Jose goaltender James Reimer. Reimer had a good game as he saved 33 of the 35 shots he was peppered with and finished the game with a save percentage of .943.

Carolina head coach Rod Brind’Amour was happy with the form of Martin Necas and said that he always knew his capability. “He’s been great. Now he’s just got to keep doing that. We knew that he had this capability. Now it’s two games in and it’s been a pretty impressive two games,” said Brind’Amour.

Svechnikov brother’s on opposite sides

Brothers Evgeny Svechnikov and Andrei Svechnikov were on opposing sides and both of them were instrumental in their teams performances. Evgeny scored the only goal for the Sharks while Andrei assisted the opening goal for the Hurricanes.

This game marked the first time they played each other in eight games when both brothers were on the ice when one of them scored.

Carolina Hurricanes’ Anti Raanta reflects on his performance

Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Antti Raanta also had a good game as he made 18 saves, including one in close to stop Tomas Hertl in the closing seconds of the game as he helped his team register their second win of the season. This game was the first one he played this season as Frederik Andersen was in goal for the first game.

Speaking after the game, Raanta said, “First game of the season for me, so there were a couple things that you want to work on and things you want to understand what to do differently. But I think we played pretty well today for the full 60 minutes and on special teams. Obviously we got the late goal and we defended really well at the end there. We’ll take the two points and move forward.”
