The second half of the season has seen the Detroit Red Wings effectively discover new methods to win. The Red Wings defeated the Edmonton Oilers 5-4 on Wednesday, extending their winning streak to four games, with Pius Suter scoring the shootout winner. In its previous 10 games, Detroit has a 7-3 record.

“It was a huge team win being up 4-2 and they tied it up and still getting away with two points,” Suter said. “In different games you have to find different ways to score.

“Today, it was a couple of faceoff plays, our special teams were good and that’s how you keep winning.”

For the Red Wings, Dylan Larkin, Moritz Seider, Robby Fabbri, and Olli Maatta scored goals during regulation (25-20-8). Before the shootout, Ville Husso had 41 saves to his credit. For the Oilers (30-19-6) who have now lost two straight games, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored twice and was assisted by Leon Draisaitl and Derek Ryan. Additionally, Edmonton has dropped six straight games that required extra time. Prior to the shootout, Jack Campbell saved 19 of 23 shots.

Detroit scored the first

Larkin extended his goal run to four games by sneaking a short-side shot past Campbell 4:17 into the first period when Detroit was on the power play. He has 21 goals for the season and six over the current stretch.

The Red Wings added a weird goal at 17:19 when Seider launched a backhand shot from the corner towards the net and it caromed off defenseman Philip Broberg, the post, and then Campbell before going in. The Oilers took the lead at 1:26 of the second period when Nugent-Hopkins blasted a wrist shot past Husso.

At 9:06, Fabbri restored Detroit’s two-goal lead while the team was on the man advantage. He snuck in from the point and beat Campbell cleanly to the far side. Just over two minutes later, Edmonton reduced the deficit to one goal when Nugent-Hopkins scored his 26th goal of the season in his 55th game after Connor McDavid sent a one-handed pass across the goal crease to him.

Nugent-Hopkins’s career best is 28 goals in 82 games in 2018-19. Maatta made it 4-2 with 3:48 to play in the second, scoring his fifth goal of the season on a point blast off the faceoff.

Draisaitl launched a one-timer with all of his weight to score the 31st goal of the season for the Oilers at 3:26 of the third period. Two minutes later, Edmonton equalized when Ryan skillfully redirected a long Kostin shot past Husso and into the goal, forcing overtime.
