Detroit’s season is off to a strong start as the Red Wings defeated Montreal on Friday in a shutout. Following a disheartening defeat to the Flyers on opening night in Philadelphia, New Jersey will try to seize an advantage over a Detroit squad that is on the rise. After a stellar summer in which Steve Yzerman added veterans David Perron, Andrew Copp, Dominik Kubalik, Ben Chiarot, and Ville Husso to the mix, expectations have increased for the Red Wings. With key players like current Calder Trophy winner Mo Seider, Lucas Raymond, Tyler Bertuzzi, and Dylan Larkin, the foundation was always solid. However, Detroit needed to have expertise in order to instruct the young men in how to play a disciplined game and win.
One of the more difficult teams to understand is the Devils. There is a ton of skill on the team, but the goaltender struggled, and they were far from making the playoffs. Ondrej Palat, a two-time Stanley Cup winner, who can significantly help a bunch of young players like Jack Hughes, Nico Hischier, and Jesper Bratt, was one of their lucky finds in free agency. Additionally, John Marino, a reliable defenseman to bolster the back end, was traded to New Jersey.
