The win for Calgary also marked the 700th regular season win for Calgary head coach Darryl Sutter. That is quite a feat for someone whose career has spanned for 35 years.
Dillon Dube was the hero as the Calgary Flames defeated defending champions Colorado Avalanche 5-3 to win an NHL season opener for the first time since 2009. Apart from Dube, Rasmus Andersson, Elias Lindholm, Tyler Toffoli and Brett Ritchie scored for Calgary as they recorded a shocking win over the defending champions. Goaltender Jacob Markstrom was in impressive form as saved 22 of the 25 shots he was peppered with.
Goal scorer Tyler Toffoli spoke after the game and said, “We wanted to come out and have a good start obviously, them playing last night too, we wanted to jump all over them and we did a really good job. Although they scored the first goal, we stuck with it and rallied off some goals there.”
The win for Calgary also marks the 700th regular season win for head coach Darryl Sutter. That is quite a feat for someone whose career has spanned for 35 years. Till now, there have only been 10 coaches that have won 700 games and Sutter’s name will now be added to that list. Speaking on the achievement, Sutter said, “It means a lot. It also means that I have coached for good teams.”
The Colorado Avalanche did not have a particularly good day at the office as they were made blunt by the Calgary defence. They could not score in the second period and by the time they scored twice in the third, the game was already over as Calgary had the advantage. Nathan MacKinnon, Bowen Byram and Valeri Nichushkin scored the goals for the Avs as they fell short in their second game.
Fans went crazy on social media and in this article, we have some of the best reactions to the game.

#Flames are 1-0-0 to start a season for the first time since 2009. Calgary wins their home opener 5-3 over Colorado.
That snaps a 12-game losing streak on opening night. Nice to have that story over with.
