Wembanyama’s Stature

Victor Wembanyama is more than a rising star, he’s a towering force on the court. Standing at a remarkable 7 feet 4 inches (2.24 meters), he shares the distinction of being the tallest active NBA player with Boban Marjanović. His incredible height is not just a physical attribute but a testament to the extraordinary potential he possesses.

Early Life

Wembanyama’s journey into the world of basketball is deeply rooted in his family’s athletic legacy. Born on January 4, 2004, in Le Chesnay, France, he inherited a rich sporting heritage. His father Félix was a versatile athlete who excelled in track and field competing in the high jump, long jump, and triple jump. On the other hand, his mother Elodie de Fautereau is not only a basketball coach but also a former player infusing basketball into the very fabric of the Wembanyama family.

Height seems to run in their blood as well. His father stands at 1.98 meters (6 feet 6 inches), while his mother reaches 1.91 meters (6 feet 3 inches). This extraordinary combination of genetics laid the foundation for Victor’s remarkable journey into the world of basketball.

Basketball wasn’t just a sport for the Wembanyama family it was a tradition. Victor’s older sister Eve pursued a professional career in basketball following in the footsteps of her mother. Even his younger brother Oscar dabbled in basketball and handball at the youth level. The family’s love for the game transcended generations. Victor’s grandfather Michel de Fautereau had his own professional basketball career and his grandmother Marie Christine was no stranger to the hardwood either.

Victor’s early sporting endeavors extended beyond the basketball court. He first ventured into the world of sports as a football goalkeeper and also practiced judo. However, it was his mother, with her coaching background, who introduced him to the magic of basketball. At the tender age of seven, Victor Wembanyama took his first steps on the basketball court and there was no looking back.

Local Beginnings to International Stardom

Victor’s basketball journey began close to home. He started his basketball career with Entente Le Chesnay Versailles and soon caught the attention of scouts with his exceptional height, standing at 1.80 meters (5 feet 11 inches) at the time. It was in 2013, during an under-11 game, that Michaël Allard, a youth coach for Nanterre 92, first noticed Victor on the bench and initially mistook him for a coach. His extraordinary height made him a standout presence even then, and his potential was undeniable.

In February 2018, Wembanyama embarked on an international adventure by joining FC Barcelona for the Minicopa del Rey, an under-14 tournament in Spain. His performance at the tournament was nothing short of spectacular, leading his team to a third-place finish. However, Victor chose to decline the offer to continue his career with Barcelona, citing that the coaches were not willing to challenge him enough, a sign of his unyielding drive for improvement.

Nanterre 92

Victor Wembanyama’s transition into professional basketball began with Nanterre 92. In the 2019-20 season, he started gaining his first professional experience under the guidance of head coach Pascal Donnadieu. While he received limited playing time with the senior team, he primarily competed in the LNB Espoirs the French under-21 league, and played for the under-18 team.

Wembanyama’s momentous professional debut occurred on October 29, 2019, when he played 31 seconds against Brescia in the EuroCup. At just 15 years, nine months, and 25 days old, he became the second-youngest player ever (after Stefan Petković) to participate in the EuroCup.

The 2020-21 season marked a significant turning point in Victor’s career as he split his time between Nanterre’s senior and under-21 teams. He also signed an agreement to play for Centre Fédéral in the Nationale Masculine 1 (NM1). Despite his young age and limited professional experience, he made his LNB Pro A debut on September 23, 2020, further solidifying his status as a rising star.

Victor Wembanyama’s remarkable journey didn’t come without its challenges. He faced a stress fracture in his fibula during an Espoirs game in December 2020, leading to a two-and-a-half-month absence from the court. However, his return saw him receive more playing time with the senior team cementing his place as a talented prospect.

ASVEL

In 2021, Victor took a significant step forward by signing a three-year contract with ASVEL, competing in the Pro A and the EuroLeague. However, his inaugural season with the team was marked by hurdles. An illness forced him to sit out for a month at the start of the season and he encountered a fractured finger which sidelined him for a few weeks.

Wembanyama’s perseverance and talent remained undeniable as he made his return to the court in December 2021. His performance during the season was commendable but a psoas muscle injury brought his season to an abrupt end. Nonetheless, ASVEL won its third consecutive Pro A championship during his absence.

At ASVEL, Wembanyama’s accomplishments included being named the Pro A Best Young Player and he averaged 9.4 points and 5.1 rebounds per game in the league. In the EuroLeague, he averaged 6.5 points and 3.8 rebounds per game finishing second in the voting for the EuroLeague Rising Star award.

Metropolitans 92

In July 2022, Victor Wembanyama embarked on a new chapter of his career by signing a two-year contract with Metropolitans 92 in the LNB Pro A. He was drawn to the team by the reputation of head coach Vincent Collet known for developing young talent and providing opportunities for rising stars.

His time at Metropolitans 92 saw him achieve new heights. In October 2022, Victor’s exhibition games against the NBA G League Ignite in Las Vegas marked his U.S. debut and garnered recognition from American media. These nationally televised games attended by over 200 scouts and NBA executives showcased his extraordinary talent to a global audience.

In the 2022-23 Pro A season, Wembanyama’s performance was nothing short of spectacular. He recorded career-high stats scoring 33 points, grabbing 12 rebounds, and displaying remarkable all-around skills in a win over Limoges CSP. His ability to consistently dominate the game both offensively and defensively propelled his team to a nine-game winning streak. His remarkable leadership and skillset culminated in his selection as the captain of the France team at the LNB All-Star Game.

At the All-Star Game, Wembanyama once again displayed his brilliance recording 27 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists. His performance led his team to a thrilling victory and earned him the title of the game’s youngest MVP.

Victor Wembanyama’s season was not just marked by individual triumphs he also led Metropolitans 92 to the Finals. However, they were ultimately eliminated by AS Monaco in a 3-0 sweep. Despite this setback, Victor’s stats remained astounding as he averaged 21.6 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks per game leading the Pro A in each of these categories.
