New York Knicks wing Cam Reddish injured his right shoulder and will miss the remainder of the season, the team announced Thursday. The third-year player suffered a separated shoulder, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, and is expected to recover in roughly six weeks. The injury occurred when Reddish took a hard fall during the Knicks‘ 131-115 win against the Sacramento Kings on Monday, after which he returned to New York for testing.

In theory, that means it’s possible that he could return during the playoffs, like he did in last year’s Eastern Conference finals as a member of the Atlanta Hawks. The problem with that is, even after winning three straight games, the Knicks are still 28-38, 12th in the East and 3.5 games back of the last play-in spot. So yeah, Reddish’s season is over.
New York traded for Reddish about two months ago, surrendering a first-round pick for a 22-year-old wing with upside. He was unhappy with his role in Atlanta, but did not find a bigger one with the Knicks. It took three weeks for him to become a regular in the rotation, and in 15 appearances he averaged 6.1 points, 1.4 rebounds, 0.7 assists, 0.8 steals and 0.9 turnovers in 14.3 minutes, only twice logging 20-plus minutes and only twice scoring in double figures. Reddish shot 8 for 31 (25.8 percent) from 3-point range, but was actually more efficient than he ever was as a Hawk because he got to the free throw line often.

All of that is to say that Reddish will not have a ton of leverage when it comes to negotiating a potential contract extension this offseason. If he doesn’t sign one, then he will be a restricted free agent in the summer of 2023.
For the Knicks’ final 16 games, R.J. Barrett, Evan Fournier, Alec Burks and Immanuel Quickley will comprise the Knicks’ wing rotation. The more interesting question, though, is what that rotation will look like next season.
