The Philadelphia 76ers used to dream of winning the championship. But with a bunch of injuries hitting, especially to their star player Joel Embiid, the Sixers have now found themselves fighting for a spot in the play-in tournament.

The Sixers let slip a 15-point lead and ended up losing 115-109 against the undermanned Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday, marking their second consecutive loss. On top of that, the short-handed Sixers were missing Tyrese Maxey due to a concussion, Kyle Lowry who was resting, De’Anthony Melton due to a back issue, and Robert Covington because of a knee problem.

Philadelphia will try to stop their losing streak from reaching three games when they play against the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday. Lowry is expected to be back for that game. Kelly Oubre Jr. was the top scorer for the Sixers with 25 points, followed by Paul Reed who contributed 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Cam Payne who added 16 points. Buddy Hield also chipped in with 15 points.

Key matchups

The Sixers had a tough time, especially in the fourth quarter, where they were outscored 34-16. With stars like Embiid and Maxey out, along with other important players missing, it’s crucial for the rest of the team to step up. Tobias Harris managed to score only eight points, and Reed fouled out. All the Sixers can do now is keep pushing and trying to overcome these challenges.

The Pelicans are on fire as the playoffs near. They’re coming into Philadelphia riding a two-game winning streak. After crushing the Indiana Pacers 129-102, they dominated the Toronto Raptors 139-98 on Tuesday. Trey Murphy III had a stellar game, tying his career high with 10 made 3-pointers and scoring 34 points. The franchise record stands at 11, set by CJ McCollum.

The Pelicans nailed 24 shots from downtown, shooting 50.5% from the field and boosting their road record to 19-13 this season. They hit 24 out of 49 attempts from beyond the 3-point line. With such a big lead in their victory, the Pelicans could afford to give their starters a break for most of the second half.
