Every year, NBA All-Star Weekend is one of the league’s high points. This season, the greatest of the NBA will descend on Cleveland for celebrations honoring everything wonderful about the game, culminating with the All-Star Game on Sunday night. However, even if the game remains the weekend’s crown gem, the activities on All-Star Saturday have the potential to steal the show.

The dunk contest is still a contentious event, but at its finest, it can be an exciting display of athleticism and ingenuity. While this year’s competition lacks major names, it does include two dynamic young guards with the potential to offer us something we’ve never seen before.

The three-point challenge will include multiple All-Stars, including Trae Young, Karl-Anthony Towns, Zach LaVine, and Fred VanVleet. There will also be a new structure for the skills challenge, with a certain two-time MVP and his two siblings battling against rookies and Cavs players.

The dunk contest and three-point contest will be held in Cleveland on Saturday, Feb. 19. The All-Star Game itself takes place one day later, on February 20.

NBA All-Star 2022 dunk contest

Jalen Green, G, Houston Rockets

Green, the No. 2 overall choice in the most recent NBA draught, is a 6’5 guard with insane hops who can put on a show. Green’s bounce around the rim as a high school standout in Fresno, California, attracted parallels to Kobe Bryant. While he’s had an average rookie season for a rebuilding Rockets club, the dunk contest provides the sort of stage that may help improve his name around the league. Don’t underestimate Green’s capacity to win this battle.

Before we get started, let’s look through the All-Star Saturday activities and make some predictions about what we anticipate to happen.

Cole Anthony, G, Orlando Magic

Cole Anthony, the son of Greg Anthony, was an excellent high school recruit out of New York who had a disappointing rookie season at North Carolina. Anthony has had a spectacular second season in the NBA, averaging 17.7 points and almost six assists per game after falling to the No. 15 selection in the 2020 lottery. Anthony is only approximately 6’2 tall, so his dunks will appear much more impressive. He’s hit some huge ones in the past.

Obi Toppin, F, Knicks

Toppin is a recent jackpot selection who is having a good second season with the Knicks. When the 6’9″ giant competed last year, he showed off his prowess in this sport. While Toppin did not win, it seems that his under-the-knees slam from near the foul line would have been the greatest of the night if he had taken one step back.

Juan Toscano-Anderson, F, Warriors

As a result of his tireless work ethic, JTA has become a favorite among Warriors fans. The 6-foot-6 forward seems to be the greatest unknown going into this tournament. As an undrafted free agent, he doesn’t have the resume of the other candidates, but he’s shown that he can be a dangerous athlete near the rim since joining the Warriors.
