The Minnesota Timberwolves were thinking about benching their star guard, Anthony Edwards, for the first game of a two-game series against the Portland Trail Blazers. Edwards’ right knee was hurting after a tough game against the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday night, and they were seriously considering giving him a break on Tuesday. Edwards was okay with the idea.

But just before the game started, Edwards had a change of heart and decided to play. He ended up scoring 41 points against the Portland Trail Blazers, helping the Minnesota Timberwolves win 121-109. Edwards will be aiming for another great performance on Thursday night when the teams face off again in Portland.

Edwards didn’t seem to be slowed down at all, hitting 16 of 27 field-goal attempts and coming just three points short of his season-high score.

Injury report

Key matchups

Edwards might not play in Thursday’s game, which is the last one before the NBA All-Star break for both teams. After that, he’s heading to Indianapolis for the All-Star Game. This is the second year in a row that the 22-year-old Edwards has been selected for the team.

Edwards is having his best season yet, averaging 26.1 points and 5.2 assists. And he’s still young, so he’s only going to improve. Timberwolves coach Chris Finch, who will be coaching the West at the All-Star Game, wasn’t shocked that Edwards played 34 minutes during his amazing performance on Tuesday.

Edwards got some scoring support from Nickeil Alexander-Walker as Minnesota improved to 3-1 on their five-game road trip. Alexander-Walker had his best game of the season, hitting 5 of 6 three-pointers and scoring 18 points off the bench for the Timberwolves. He’s been averaging 23.1 minutes and 7.1 points per game, carving out a role with Minnesota, who are currently the top team in the Western Conference.
