The Golden State Warriors’ Klay Thompson may be facing a change. The Warriors had proposed a two-year $48 million extension before the 2023-24 season. This falls short compared to the five-year max contract he signed earlier in 2019. His skill has been hit by challenges with shooting. In addition, the team’s goal to keep below the luxury tax threshold sparks uncertainty about Thompson’s future. Though both parties wish for him to end his career as a Warrior, the buzz points towards the Orlando Magic as a possible new home in free agency for our long-range specialist.

The Orlando Magic, with low 3-point scores need someone like Thompson’s shooting skills. Strong defenders like Suggs, Wagner, Banchero and Carter Jr. could help Thompson with defense. Also, their young team, all 26 or less doesn’t have a lot of playoff practice. This makes Thompson’s championship history and leadership great for their development.

Potential Fit and Cap Space Considerations

Klay Thompson and the Orlando Magic seem like a good match if we look at his skills and their roster. Thompson is great at shooting from outside. This is something that the Magic could use to help their scoring. Plus, having Thompson on their team would work well with Wagner and Banchero. They take care of the ball mostly. So, the Magic might not need a typical main person with the ball in the backcourt if they have him.

The Magic has a budget of over $30 million at present. This amount could change depending on what they decide about their free agents. Two major players Markelle Fultz and Gary Harris, both might become unrestricted free agents. Joe Ingles has an $11 million team option available and the team also may keep or let go of Jonathan Isaac’s $17.4 million non-guaranteed pay. The Magic might have enough money for a maximum salary slot. This would make it possible for them to offer Thompson a deal that fits their future goals without messing up their financial obligations.

So, the Golden State Warriors are still seen leading the race to keep Klay Thompson. Yet, look at the Orlando Magic. They could be the new home for Thompson who’s famous for his impressive shooting skills. The Magic needs strong outside shooters. Thompson’s experience of winning championships could give them the edge. It seems like a good match. They have money to spend and a young team eager to win games. This gives the Magic a real shot at convincing Thompson to join them and boost their position in the league.
