The Charlotte Hornets have a new leade and his name is Jeff Peterson. He’s just stepped up to the plate as their Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations. Peterson knows basketball as he is an old hand at this and now he has got his sights set on turning the Hornets around. They have had some tough times. Peterson’s not scared, though he sees this as a big chance and he is going to leave his mark on this team.
At 35, Jeff Peterson steps into his new role armed with plenty of know-how. His resume includes a stint at the Atlanta Hawks’ frontline, followed by nearly five seasons with the Brooklyn Nets as an assistant GM. There, Peterson made impactful moves. He signed big names such as Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. He coordinated trades for players including James Harden, Mikal Bridges, and Cam Johnson. And he made savvy choices during the draft.
Peterson is taking over a challenging team with a poor 15-47 record this season. The Hornets haven’t seen playoffs since the 2016-17 season, the worst in the league’s history. Yet, without superstar status and a shifting team, Peterson is hopeful. He’s eager to understand their capabilities.
At the recent trade deadline, the Hornets made several changes. They traded notable players Terry Rozier, Gordon Hayward, and P.J. Washington for future picks and potential young talent. Peterson is enthusiastic about the new team, seeing room for growth. He plans to use the last 20 games to assess what’s working and what’s not.
The Hornets plan to be quite involved in the forthcoming free agency stage. They’ve got a projected $40 million in salary cap room. That’s the seventh highest nationwide. This gives them the money and power to create big changes. Peterson, with Schnall and Plotkin by his side, wants to tweak the lineup. They’re hoping to shape a team that’s set for lasting wins.
The team is happy Peterson’s on board. People in the league like him. He is a basketball expert. Also, he’s ambitious. These make him perfect for the Hornets. Peterson gets the last word on staff changes. Yet, he’ll also team up with Schnall and Plotkin to make decisions.
