When the San Antonio Spurs take on the Golden State Warriors in a back-to-back series this Saturday in San Francisco, they’ll be missing some big names. Spurs’ rising star rookie Victor Wembanyama and Warriors’ legend Stephen Curry both got sidelined with right-ankle injuries this week, so they’ll probably sit out the first game of the series.

Wembanyama got injured during Tuesday’s game against the Houston Rockets. He had to head back to San Antonio for more tests and sat out of Thursday’s game, which the Spurs lost 131-129 against Sacramento. This loss marked the seventh consecutive defeat for the Spurs without Wembanyama playing. What’s even more frustrating is that four of those losses were by just six points or less.

Despite the odds, San Antonio had an opportunity to surprise the Kings on their turf. However, Devin Vassell’s attempt at a buzzer-beating 3-pointer fell short, even after he racked up an impressive 30 points throughout the game.

Back in November during the NBA in-season tournament, Vassell scored 24 points while Wembanyama added 22, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win against the Warriors, as the Spurs lost 118-112. In that game, both Wembanyama and Keldon Johnson had chances to hit crucial 3-pointers late in the game, but unfortunately, they couldn’t make them count when it mattered most.

Injury report

Fir the Warriors, only Curry is unavailable for the game due to an ankle injury. As for the Spurs, Bassey (knee injury), Osman (ankle injury), and Wembanyama (ankle injury) will not be playing the game.

Key matchups

The Warriors didn’t waste any time getting Curry off the court after he rolled his ankle during Thursday’s close 125-122 loss to the Bulls at home. Without Curry, Golden State struggled, getting outscored 14-8 in the final 3:51 of the game. Curry was set to undergo an MRI on Friday, and regardless of the results, the team expected him to be out for a while.

The Warriors and Spurs are set for a rematch on Monday night in San Antonio, and the Spurs are crossing their fingers that Wembanyama will be fit to play. However, the Warriors’ players weren’t feeling too optimistic after their loss on Thursday.

When Curry wasn’t on the court this season, the Warriors suffered losses. They fell 104-101 to the Timberwolves and 128-109 to the Thunder in back-to-back home games in November. Then, in January, they lost 129-118 to Milwaukee.
