Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto believes teams are sandbagging, which makes predicting the Formula One pecking order premature. Various pundits are tipping Ferrari to be at the top of the 2022 F1 pecking order, with the Scuderia impressing with their reliability, having run the most laps over the three days of testing in Barcelona, racking up 439 laps, equivalent to 2052 km. The team’s F1-75 also impressed with its innovative design, as evidenced by the distinct design of its sidepod, while rumour is that the Scuderia has arrived with a decent power unit, now capable of competing with Mercedes and Honda (Red Bull power trains).

Binotto, however, denied that the Scuderia were ahead of the front-runners in Formula One. Rumours speak of major progress on the ICE (internal combustion engine), combined with a super-evolved hybrid part, for a total power output that would now be on a par with Mercedes and Honda,” the Italian said.

“For judging the performance is too early, I think. Some teams are sandbagging more than others. We will see that with the tests in Bahrain and with the first races,” he added.

Toto says Ferrari have strongest engine

Ferrari received high praise from Mercedes chief Toto Wolff who believes that the team has the strongest engine ahead of the 2022 season. “We have the feeling that Ferrari currently has the most powerful engine. But we’ve only had three days of testing and winter testing can be deceiving,” the German had said earlier.

When it comes to upgrading the F1-75, Binotto said that Ferrari would not make any drastic changes, at least during the first part of the season. “At the beginning of the season, we will try to exploit all the potential of the car, that’s the first upgrade. We will do some small changes, but nothing drastic,” he said.

“So we will focus, at the beginning of the season, mostly on drawing out all the potential from the current car,” he added.
