Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel has become a campaigner on environmental issues in recent times. The German has also spoken out passionately on human rights and LGBTQ+ issues. He wore a t-shirt in Miami last weekend to highlight the threat of rising sea levels around Florida city. He exclaimed that it was not a political message and that he did not wish to be political. “It’s a very human message. Not a political message, I’m not a politician, I don’t want to be political,” Vettel said.

“Great that we have a race here, there are great people here and it’s very exciting. But, I find it alarming and I’m surprised we go to a place that’s not going to be there in 50 years’ time and everybody acts and carries on business as usual.” added the 35-year-old.

‘Driving is my Passion’

Vettel discussed the conflict between his enthusiasm for Formula One and his thoughts on climate change. The German said that he loves it every time he steps in the car, but feels conflicted when he gets out. “Every time I step in the car, I love it,” he said. “When I get out of the car, of course I’m thinking is this something we should do, travel the world, ‘wasting’ resources? On the other hand, we are entertaining people, during Covid we were one of the first sports to start again and there were races back on.” expressed the Aston Martin driver.

The need for renewable energy

Due to the nature of the fuel utilized in his sport, Vettel publicly said that working in Formula 1 with his ideas about the need for renewable energy makes him a hypocrite. He further appeal that there is a need to stop depending on fossil fuels and look for options. “We need to stop being dependent [on fossil fuels], and we can, because there are solutions in place. I’m very concerned when it comes to the future, such topics; energy, energy dependence and where we will go in the future.” said the German.

Formula one plans sustainability for the future

The sport intends to reach net-zero carbon by 2030, which will include an increase in engine efficiency that will boost the amount of overall power delivered by the hybrid element of the power-unit to 50%. The hybrid engines used in automobiles are already among the most efficient in the world. They have taken a remarkable stride forward in thermal efficiency, the measure of turning fuel energy to power by boosting it to more than 50% from the ordinary road-going petrol engine’s 30% or so.

Furthermore, it plans to deliver totally sustainable, carbon-neutral fuels with the new engines in 2026. It is thought that by doing so, it would be able to advocate for the use of these fuels in the remaining internal combustion-engined road automobiles.
