Spanish Formula One driver Carlos Sainz signed a new two-year contract with Ferrari on Thursday. The Spaniard and the Scuderia had been in talks for quite a while and rumours had also emerged that there were some disagreements over the length of the contract, However, Thursday afternoon saw the Spaniard confirm the new deal on social media as he looks to make a significant mark in the 2022 season. The Scuderia have had an outstanding start so far with at least one driver finishing on the podium in all three races. They sit atop the constructors’ championship table, leaps and bounds ahead of their nearest challengers.

“Very happy to renew two more years with @ScuderiaFerrari! Wearing this suit and representing this team is a great honor for me. Ferrari is fighting up front again and I will give everything to fight for both championships! Go!,” the Spaniard posted in Spanish on Twitter.

Although the Scuderia have had a strong start to 2022, Sainz does not feel he has been up to the mark, The 27-year-old did finish on the podium twice in three races but the gap in points between him and his teammate Charles Leclerc might be something that has been on his mind. The Spaniard had earlier mentioned that driving the new F1 cars has been anything but a cakewalk.

Earlier report suggested disagreement between Sainz and Ferrari

According to a report from Germany, Ferrari and Carlos Sainz have differing viewpoints on negotiating a new contract. According to F1-Insider, the Spaniard wants a two-year deal to stay with the Scuderia, whereas the team is pushing for a one-year deal with a second-year option. While this keeps the team’s options open for 2024, it also makes Sainz’s seat less secure for the following year. If the report is accurate, there will almost certainly be a standoff.

Both the team and the driver have said for a long time that a new contract for the 27-year-old is nearly finalized, with team principal Mattia Binotto saying in December that his future with the team beyond the end of 2022 would be discussed.

However, no new deal for Sainz has been announced as of yet. Despite two podium finishes, the Spaniard has fallen behind teammate Charles Leclerc in the Drivers’ Championship standings, trailing the Monegasque by 38 points after only three races.
