A brand new era of Formula One is only a couple of days away and with the new technical regulations in play, fans are hoping for a much higher level of competition. As Friday’s practice sessions have shown, there is not much of a difference between the teams. The first race of the season might very well see some newer faces on the podium, but the usual suspects should never be counted out. Regardless of who wins the race, it promises to be a scintillating affair that will keep fans on the edge of their seats.

Verstappen always a favorite

Of course, reigning world champion and Red Bull Racing’s ace driver Max Verstappen will be the odds on favorite. The Dutchman impressed in FP2 as he set the fastest time of all, narrowly edging the two Ferraris. Verstappen will certainly be looking for the best possible start to his first-ever title defence, and there is no better way than winning the first race of the season. Of course, it will not be an easy task.

The Scuderia looks strong

The two Ferrari drivers, Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc, have been in incredible form ever since the first pre-season testing event at the Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya. The prancing horse has been tipped to be one of the strongest teams this season, and fans are excited to see how the legendary constructor performs in 2022. If all goes to plan, Mattia Binotto can easily expect at least one of his two drivers on the podium.

Mercedes will likely struggle

The reigning constructors’ champions, Mercedes, seem to be in a bit of a pickle. Reliability has not been an issue for the silver arrows, but maneuvering the W13 has proven to be a challenge for both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. Hamilton cold only go ninth fastest in FP2, while Russell was fourth. Both drivers have admitted that the team is nowhere near where it should be in terms of performance, so Toto Wolff will have to brace for a tough day at the office.

Haas could deliver a mammoth performance

The new regulations seem to have been a blessing in disguise for Haas. The American constructor shocked most fans with their performance in Friday’s practice. Mick Schumacher went eighth fastest on the day, ahead of Hamilton. Kevin Magnussen also delivered a stunning performance as he went tenth fastest. The Danish driver has been impressive ever since his return to Formula One and he will be eager to prove himself on track.
