Aston Martin 'hitting the targets' for 2022 season, says Otmar Szafnauer

Szafnauer is sure that Aston Martin is on the correct track, despite the fact that he has no knowledge of how the other teams have done.

Aston Martin is now hitting its aims, according to Otmar Szafnauer, ahead of the upcoming Formula One season in 2022. In its previous iteration as Racing Point, the team had a great 2020 season, finishing fourth in the constructors’ championship, just eight points behind McLaren for third.

Following a major regulation change that hampered low-rake cars last winter, Aston Martin has dropped to seventh place this year. As a result, the team was compelled to immediately shift its focus to 2022 and the crucial new aerodynamics rules. Szafnauer is sure that Aston Martin is on the correct track, despite the fact that he has no knowledge of how the other nine Formula One teams have done thus far.

“Internally, we’ve hit the targets we’ve set and we still continue to make progress every week,” said Szafnauer in an interview with GPFans.

“We’re happy with the progress that we’ve made, but I don’t know with the others and it’s really hard to try to eke out any competitor information. Everyone’s tight-lipped, as we are too. We don’t say anything apart from we’re hitting our targets, but the key is what target did you set? That’s the bit we don’t tell,” he added.

Vettel takes responsibility

Sebastian Vettel has tried his best to regain his former glory after leaving Ferrari in F1. During the last couple of seasons, he has raced with Aston Martin. The car, which came into Formula One as Racing Point in 2020, was now known by this Avatar in 2021. Vettel put in some solid performances and he was ably assisted by Lance Stroll in their first year together with the new team.

The 2021 F1 season was a difficult one for Sebastian Vettel and Aston Martin. There was no pre-season testing and the car was very difficult to handle. Vettel though scored his first points with a fifth-place finish in Monaco. But, things became better for Vettel as he secured a second-place finish in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. That race became famous for Lewis Hamilton going wide on the final lap and slipping down to last. Vettel secured second in Hungary but was disqualified. The four-time champion finished 12th in the driver’s standings but he made a record for 132 overtakes, which was the most by any driver that season.
